Why Is There a Real Need for Real-Time Payments Fraud Prevention?

Why Is There a Real Need for Real-Time Payments Fraud Prevention?

This is a question I get asked regularly during executive demos and client conversations more often by larger institutions today, but increasingly by mid-size banks and fintechs who are starting to feel the pressure.

Let me answer it based on what I’ve seen first-hand, building and deploying AML and fraud programs globally.

The fraud happened at 2:47 AM.
The alert was generated at 9:15 AM.

By then, $7,400 had already passed through three accounts across two countries, moving first via ACH and then exiting the system through a WIRE transfer.

That story isn’t hypothetical. Variations of it play out every single dayoften more frequently than leadership teams are comfortable acknowledging.

The uncomfortable truth is this:
Fraud isn’t just increasing. It’s accelerating.

And most traditional fraud programs were never designed for speed.

Fraud Today Is Payment-Rail Aware

One of the biggest shifts I’ve seen over the years is this:

Fraud is no longer generic.
It is deeply aware of payment rails.

Fraudsters don’t just exploit weak controls—they exploit how each payment system is designed, where it settles, when it becomes final, and how long institutions take to respond.

Every payment type has its own fraud profile. Fraudsters understand those profiles extremely well and they weaponize the loopholes.

Payment Types and How Fraudsters Exploit Them

ACH (United States)

ACH fraud is a game of timing and reversibility.

  • Credits settle quickly
  • Returns take days
  • Monitoring is still largely batch-based

Fraudsters exploit:

  • Account takeovers followed by outbound ACH credits
  • Mule accounts timed around weekends and holidays
  • The gap between posting and return windows

By the time ACH fraud is detected, the money is usually gone.

Wires (United States)

Wire fraud is about authority and finality.

  • High value
  • Near-instant settlement
  • Very limited recall options

Typical attacks include:

  • Business Email Compromise (BEC)
  • Authorized Push Payment (APP) scams
  • Social engineering that bypasses authentication rather than breaking it

The challenge isn’t spotting anomalies it’s detecting compromised intent in real time.

Checks (United States)

Checks may be legacy, but they remain a favorite fraud vector.

Why?

  • Slow clearing cycles
  • Fragmented monitoring across capture, deposit, and clearing
  • Heavy reliance on post-settlement review

Common fraud patterns:

  • Check washing and alteration
  • Synthetic identities depositing high-value checks
  • Rapid funds availability exploitation

Checks move slowly. Fraud through checks does not.

SEPA Credit Transfers (European Union)

SEPA fraud thrives on scale and trust.

  • Pan-European reach
  • High automation
  • Historically lower friction

Fraudsters exploit:

  • IBAN familiarity and invoice manipulation
  • Compromised accounts used for rapid outbound transfers
  • Limited behavioral context across borders

Once a SEPA payment leaves the system, recovery options narrow quickly.

TARGET2 (European Union)

TARGET2 fraud is rare but extremely high impact.

  • High-value, institution-to-institution payments
  • Immediate settlement
  • Absolute finality

Threats typically involve:

  • Privileged access compromise
  • Insider-assisted fraud
  • Infrastructure-level attacks

Here, seconds matter, not hours.

RTP / Faster Payments (United Kingdom)

This is where fraud velocity reaches its peak.

  • Instant settlement
  • Irreversible by design
  • Massive consumer adoption

Fraudsters exploit:

  • Authorized Push Payment (APP) scams
  • Mule networks that drain funds immediately
  • Behavioral blind spots in real-time channels

Traditional “review-after-posting” controls simply don’t apply.

The Common Weakness Fraudsters Exploit

Across all these payment rails, one pattern repeats:

Fraud doesn’t succeed because institutions lack rules.
It succeeds because controls move slower than money.

Fraudsters know:

  • When settlement becomes final
  • How long recalls take
  • Which alerts run in batch
  • Where human review is assumed

They design attacks to complete before detection even begins.

This is exactly how modern fraud escalates across payment rails probing with slower, reversible channels, then accelerating into faster, irreversible ones before traditional controls even engage.

Why Batch-Based Detection No Longer Works

Most legacy fraud platforms operate:

  • Per payment rail
  • Per channel
  • Per processing cycle

That creates blind spots.

Fraud today is cross-rail, sequential, and orchestrated:
Compromise → Test → Escalate → Drain → Exit

Batch systems see fragments.
Fraudsters execute the entire chain.

How Velocity Enables Real-Time, Cross-Rail Fraud Prevention

Velocity was built around a simple but critical insight:
Fraud must be understood in the context of how money actually moves.

That’s why Velocity treats ACH, wires, checks, SEPA, TARGET2, RTP, and Faster Payments as part of a single risk fabric, not isolated systems.

What Velocity Does Differently

  • Real-time risk evaluation across all payment types
Every transaction is assessed as activity unfolds not hours later.
  • Behavior-first detection
Velocity evaluates who is acting, how they normally behave, and what changed before payment finality.
  • Cross-rail risk propagation
Risk detected in login behavior or device activity immediately influences payment decisions across rails.
  • Pre-investigated, payment-ware alerts
Analysts see why a specific ACH, SEPA, or RTP transaction is risky instantly.
  • Clear division between automation and human judgment
Automation handles speed. Humans handle intent and edge cases.
  • Audit-ready, defensible outcomes
Every action is traceable, explainable, and regulator-ready.

Velocity compresses the gap between transaction, insight, and action the exact gap fraudsters rely on.
